Going through the motions

Published on Thursday, 30. September 2021

I'm trapped in a beginner's mindset. I don't know where I want to go with this blog, have no consistent direction I'm following. I don't take the time to learn something new that would have the chance of leading me somewhere. It's one of the reoccurring themes on my blog.

I feel like someone who wants to become a jazz pianist by pressing random keys on the keyboard, hoping something good will come of it. I know it doesn't work, but it's exactly what I'm doing with my blog. I'm just going through the motions of writing. Of drafting, editing, and deleting most of what I wrote because it went on a tangent that doesn't contribute to whatever I arbitrarily decided this post will be about. Good writing has a goal. But I don't. I only write to keep up my streak. I could use a postmodernism generator for that.

Going through the motions is always better than doing nothing. Keeping up a habit if you don't feel like it is what will make it stick. If you don't do it, you might stop completely. The danger is to become trapped in the habit of going through the motions. Breaking out of this will be hard work.
