What if it were easy?
Published on Monday, 11. October 2021If it were easy, I knew exactly what I want to do and the price to do it. I would pay it without a second thought, because I would know that it's the right thing to do. If it were easy, I had no trouble with procrastination and would spend my time exactly as I intended to do.
What do I want to do? Let's take this blog for example. My goal is to write one post per day. This is not very specific. What topics do I want to write about? How many words per post? How much time? What do I want to achieve by posting daily in the first place?
My original intention with this blog was to have a catalyst for creativity. I have too many ideas for my own good. In my blog, I wanted to go through them as quickly as possible to see what I like working on. But on its own a catalyst doesn't do much. It only reduces the energy needed to initiate a reaction. Without reactants, it's useless. If writing this blog were easy, I would have a larger goal I want to reach and would use this blog to reach it faster. Two goals that come to mind are becoming a better programmer and improving my ability to communicate technical ideas.
If it were easy, I would focus on what I can control and stop obsessing about what I can't.
I can't control how good I feel. But I can work on my blog despite being feeling bad. I can also increase the probability of having a good mental state by eating healthy, working out, and getting enough sleep.
I can't control if I have good ideas. But I can spend some time each day to think of new ideas, and turn them into reality, no matter their perceived quality.
I can't control what other ideas suddenly become interesting as soon as I commit to something. I can only accept that this will always happen and use a someday list to get them out of my head.
I can't control the quality of my posts. I also can't improve and look good at the same time. So I will write a lot of bad stuff. If it were easy, I would be okay with that.
