Two cups and one decision
Published on Sunday, 01. May 2022Here are the pictures of two cups. What is the fundamental difference between them?
The cup on the left is hand made. For it to exist, someone spend years perfecting a craft and produced a cup that only exists once in the entire world. The cup on the right was made in a factory. Instead of spending years on perfecting the craft, someone spend the same effort on streamlining the process of producing a cup by focusing on what is essential and stripping away everything else.
Streamlining the process works because it makes the production scalable. Most people don't care about the cup they drink their coffee from. By making the production scalable, each cup becomes less expensive, and all these people can be reached.
Making cups by hand works by finding the few people that care about the personalised version. The effort required to produce the handmade cup is possible because those people are willing to pay the premium required to sustain it.
Both approaches are a valid strategy. But which one do you want to work on?
